Curl Perfection: the perfect wash day

Our recommendations should still fit your needs, which is why we also explain limitations and situations where a MONAT product is not the right solution.

Curls and waves move to their own rhythm. What gives straight hair bounce — vigorous towel-rubbing, daily washing, brushing while dry — destroys exactly what you want in curls: definition. That's why MONAT's Curl Perfection idea turns wash day on its head: cleanse gently, condition generously, style into soaking-wet hair, then leave it alone. Here's that routine step by step — polished enough for a proper wash day, simple enough for everyday life.

Curls work differently

The tighter the coil, the harder it is for the scalp's nourishing sebum to travel down into the lengths — so curls are naturally drier and more sensitive to friction. Two principles carry the whole wash day: moisture in and friction out. Everything that follows serves only those two goals. If you don't know your curl type yet, the guide on curly and wavy hair care will help you place it.

Cleanse gently — or co-wash

Curls need washing less often than straight hair. Work a mild, sulphate-free shampoo into the scalp and let the lather rinse through the lengths on its way down — don't scrub. Very dry, tight curls often do well with co-washing: a wash with conditioner alone, which doesn't strip their already-scarce lipids. The catch: without real cleansing, product residue builds up over time, so work in a clarifying shampoo now and then. Mild washing or co-wash — both fit the Curl Perfection approach nicely.

The Curl Perfection wash day step by step

  1. Cleanse gently or co-wash. Wash the scalp mildly, take the lengths along gently.
  2. Condition generously and finger-detangle. Work plenty of conditioner into the wet lengths and detangle the curls with your fingers (or a wide-tooth comb) while still in the shower — never brush dry.
  3. Style into soaking-wet hair. Distribute your curl product or leave-in while the hair is still dripping — this keeps the curl clumps together.
  4. Scrunch. Squeeze the hair upward toward the scalp until you hear it squelch. That's how waves and spirals form.
  5. Plop or microfibre. Wrap the hair loosely in a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel (about 10–20 minutes) to draw out water without rubbing.
  6. Air-dry or diffuse. Let it dry in the air, or use a diffuser on a low setting with gentle heat.
  7. Don't touch. Keep your hands off while it dries — every touch triggers frizz.

Which MONAT products fit the routine

The Curl Perfection approach lives on technique more than on any single jar. A mild MONAT shampoo works as your cleanse, a rich conditioner as your moisture boost for the squish. For the finishing touch, a few drops of REJUVENIQE® Oil Intensive give the ends shine and a little protection. MONAT also offers its own Curl Perfection styling products, such as a curl cream and a gelée — though their availability varies from market to market. It's best to ask your consultant about the current range rather than committing to one specific product; the right combination depends on your curl type anyway.

Drying without disturbing the definition

Drying decides the final result. Rubbing with a towel tears the clumps open and leaves a veil of frizz — which is exactly what plopping and microfibre prevent. With a diffuser: low setting, low temperature, cradle the hair in the bowl rather than blasting through it. And as hard as it is: hands off until the hair is truly dry. Touch dry curls too early and you trade definition for fuzz. There's more on this in the guide on how to tame frizz.

Refreshing between washes

Curls don't need daily washing — they get refreshed. In the morning, spritz a little water or a light leave-in onto flattened sections, reshape individual pieces with your fingers and let them dry briefly. At night, a satin or silk pillowcase protects against friction frizz, or tie a loose "pineapple" on top of your head. That keeps your wash-day result fresh for several days.

Quick questions

How wet should my hair be for styling? Soaking, ideally dripping. On very wet hair, products spread evenly and the curl clumps stay together — on half-dry hair, frizz appears faster.

What exactly is scrunching? You cup the hair in your palm and squeeze it from the ends up toward the scalp, again and again, until it squelches. This activates the natural curl and distributes the product.

Why shouldn't I touch my curls while they dry? Every touch rubs the shaped clumps open and triggers frizz. Only once the hair is completely dry should you gently shake it loose.

Do I really need a diffuser? No. Air-drying works just as well, it simply takes longer. A diffuser on a low setting speeds it up and adds volume at the roots — nothing more.
