Advanced Hydration or Renew? Pick the right system

Transparency notice: Glow Tribe is operated by independent MONAT Market Partners. We may receive compensation if you purchase through our links or join as a VIP or Market Partner. Our recommendations should still fit your needs, which is why we also explain limitations and situations where a MONAT product is not the right solution.

Both MONAT systems share the same goal: they bring moisture back to hair that feels dry, dull or straw-like. Even so, Advanced Hydration and Renew are not interchangeable — and "richer is always better" is one of the most stubborn myths in hair care. The right choice almost always comes down to a single question: how thick is your individual strand? Get that wrong and you either under-nourish your hair or weigh it down into a flat, quick-to-grease look. This guide helps you decide honestly which system fits you — or whether neither is the right call right now.

Two moisture systems, one goal

Both lines use moisture-focused, nature-based formulas and are designed to work as a coordinated routine. The difference is in weight and richness.

Advanced Hydration is the lighter system. It delivers moisture without weighing hair down and keeps the roots feeling airy. After use, hair can feel softer and look smoother without losing its fullness.

Renew is the richer system. It coats the strand more intensely and is made for hair that can take more "feeding" without going limp. Very dry, coarser lengths can look more cared-for and defined with it.

In short: both add moisture — but Advanced Hydration does it lightly, Renew generously.

The key question: how thick is your hair?

What matters isn't how much hair you have, but how thick each individual strand is. A simple test: take a single hair between your fingers. If you can barely feel it, it's fine. If it feels distinct, almost wiry, it's thick.

  • Fine to medium hair: this usually calls for Advanced Hydration. Fine hair reacts sensitively to heavy formulas — it flattens against the head, looks limp and needs washing more often. The lighter system adds moisture without costing that fullness.
  • Medium to thick, very dry hair: this is where Renew shows its strength. Thicker hair "drinks up" more care and still stays mobile. If your lengths feel rough even after washing, they can handle something richer.

If you're somewhere in between, go by feel: if care quickly flattens your hair, stay light. If it stays voluminous but still dry even with rich products, you can go heavier. For more on the causes, see our guide to dry hair.

When neither is the right choice

Moisture care solves a moisture problem — not every problem. Be honest with yourself here:

  • If your issue is the scalp — itching, flakes, tightness — the answer isn't a richer lengths treatment but a suitable scalp routine.
  • If your hair is breaking or splitting (say, after bleaching or frequent heat styling), damage care comes first. Moisture alone doesn't make the fibre more resilient — it's worth reading our guide to split ends and breakage.
  • If your hair is genuinely healthy and balanced, you don't need an intensive system just because it exists. Sometimes the simplest routine is the right one.

Often it's a combination: dryness and damage. Then moisture can be one building block — just not the only one.

How to use your system

The biggest lever is consistent use, not quantity:

Step 1 — Stay within one system. A line's cleanser and conditioner are designed to work together. Mixing both systems is rarely necessary.

Step 2 — Apply care to lengths and ends only. Roots rarely need richness — that's where the weighed-down, greasy impression comes from.

Step 3 — Less is more. Start with a small amount and add more if needed, rather than overloading the hair.

Common mistakes

  • "Richer is better." The classic. Fine hair is weighed down by Renew rather than nourished.
  • Choosing by scent or packaging instead of by hair structure.
  • Mixing systems before trying one consistently.
  • Using moisture as the fix for scalp or damage issues.

Quick questions

I have fine but very dry hair — Advanced Hydration or Renew? Start with Advanced Hydration. It adds moisture without costing fullness. Only if the lengths stay persistently rough might something richer on the ends make sense.

Can I combine both systems? Usually not necessary. Try one system consistently first. A combination only really pays off when roots and ends behave very differently.

How do I know my system is too rich? Hair looks flat, greases up faster, or is hard to style. Then step down to something lighter.

Does either one help with hair loss? No. Moisture care improves how existing hair looks and feels. With actual hair loss, the cause should be checked by a doctor.
