What order to apply hair products in

The right order is simpler than it sounds: cleanse first, then nourish, then protect, and style last. The rule of thumb is "water-based before oil-based" and "protect before heat". Light, watery products absorb first and hydrate the hair; oily products go on afterwards to seal everything in. Follow this order and you'll get more out of every single product – and usually need less of it.

Why the order matters at all

Hair products build on each other. A leave-in adds moisture to the hair; an oil locks it in. Apply the oil first and you seal a dry strand shut – the moisture from your leave-in can barely get through afterwards. Heat protection works the same way: it has to be on the hair before the dryer or flat iron, otherwise it protects nothing.

Two principles carry the whole routine:

• Water-based before oil-based. Light, hydrating products first, heavy and oily ones last.
• Protect before heat. Heat protectant always goes on before hot styling, never after.

The order step by step

This order works for most hair types. Not every product is needed every day – but when you combine several, this is the sequence.

Step 1 — Shampoo. Cleanse the scalp, not just the lengths. Massage the shampoo in gently and rinse thoroughly. For long hair, one wash is often enough.

Step 2 — Conditioner or mask. Apply to the lengths and ends, not the scalp. A mask replaces conditioner on treatment days – using both is usually too much. Leave it briefly, then rinse out.

Step 3 — Leave-in. Work it through towel-damp hair. The leave-in binds the moisture and is the foundation for everything that follows. This is where product layering really begins.

Step 4 — Heat protectant. Apply before any hot tool and distribute evenly. Even if you only blow-dry, don't skip it.

Step 5 — Oil or serum. Smooth one or two drops of a light oil – such as a plant-based oil like MONAT's – through the lengths and ends. This seals the moisture in from the outside.

Step 6 — Styling. Foam, gel, cream or curl definer come last. These products shape and hold – they belong right on top of the layers.

What changes for wavy or curly hair?

Curly and wavy hair is naturally drier and loves moisture. Here you often use more product and apply it to soaking-wet hair, not just towel-damp. The popular "LOC" or "LCO" method works well: leave-in (liquid), then cream, then oil – the light-to-heavy order stays the same. Gel or curl definer go on last, often with the "scrunch" technique, then get gently broken up once dry.

Straight and fine hair, by contrast, needs less and lighter products. Too much oil or cream weighs it down and makes it look stringy. The rule here: use small amounts, keep oil to the ends only, and reach for heavy masks less often.

Quick questions

Does heat protectant go on before or after the leave-in? After the leave-in. First you hydrate the hair, then you layer the heat protectant on top – and only then comes the heat. That way you're protecting hydrated hair rather than dry hair.

What's the most common mistake? Oil before heat protectant, and using too much product in general. Oil first seals the hair before moisture and protection can get in. And too many layers weigh the hair down – less is almost always more.

Do I have to do every step every day? No. Shampoo and conditioner only on wash days, a mask once or twice a week, oil and heat protectant as needed. All that matters is getting the order right when you do combine several products.
