A good skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated — it actually gets better the simpler it stays. If you're facing half a dozen tubes every morning, you'll usually keep it up less faithfully than someone with three products they know by heart. As an independent MONAT Partner I see it again and again: it isn't the longest routine that gives skin the nicest feel, it's the one you actually do every day. So that's what this is — a plain framework you can remember and build up one step at a time.
Morning and evening — two simple routines
The whole framework fits into two short reminders. In the morning you get your skin ready for the day; in the evening you help it wind down.
Morning:
- Cleanse — wash off the night, wake the skin up.
- Optional serum — a targeted extra step, if you like.
- Moisturise — a hydrator that carries you through the day.
- Sun protection — the most important morning step, every day.
Evening:
- Cleanse — take off SPF, make-up and the day.
- Treat — your targeted product, where you actually need it.
- Moisturise — a hydrator that works overnight.
That's the whole job, really: cleanse, treat, moisturise — and protect during the day.
Why the order matters
The order isn't a ritual, it's just practical. The rough rule is: lightest to richest. A fluid serum sinks in faster, so it goes before the heavier moisturiser — the other way round it just sits on an already-sealed layer and barely lands. Cleansing always comes first, because everything after it feels nicer on clean skin. And sun protection goes on last in the morning, as the outer layer. Keep the picture of "thin before thick" in your head and the order more or less finds itself.
Start small — and stick with it
The most common mistake is wanting it all at once. My advice: begin with a cleanser and a moisturiser, nothing more. That pair is your foundation, and for a lot of people it's enough for a surprisingly long time. A serum or a treatment step is an add-on, not a must — you bring it in once the basics are settled.
When you do add something new, add only one product at a time and give it a few weeks. That's the only way to tell what genuinely suits you. Just as important: the patch test. Try a new product on a small area first — the inner arm or along the jaw — for a few days before it goes near your face. And as a rule, consistency beats complexity: two products you use every single day do more than ten sitting half-used in the cupboard.
Where MONAT fits in
MONAT carries a skincare range that slots neatly into this same framework. At the step level that means a cleanser for the first step, a moisturiser for the care step, and a serum for the optional extra step. So you don't have to swap out everything at once — you can bring in a single product exactly where you feel you need one.
Which products are actually available where you live varies from market to market, so it's worth a quick word with your consultant before you plan. For a calm overview of the range, see MONAT skincare overview. And because the moisturising step is the foundation for almost everyone, it's worth reading Hydration for the skin first.
Staying honest: "naturally derived" isn't automatically gentle
One point that matters to me: an ingredient being naturally derived doesn't automatically make it gentle or right for every skin. Plant-derived ingredients can still irritate, or simply not feel right on you — that's completely normal and says nothing about quality. That's why the patch test stays the simplest insurance you have. Listen to how your skin feels: if something tightens, itches or reddens, that's a clear sign to ease off — not to push through.
Quick questions
Do I really need sun protection every morning? It's the step I'm least willing to skip. It belongs in the morning as the outer layer — on cloudy days just as much as in summer.
Can I leave the serum out? Yes, any time. The serum is the optional extra step. Cleanser and moisturiser are the base; the serum joins in only when you fancy it.
How quickly will I see something? Give each new product a few weeks and change only one thing at a time. If you keep switching, you can't tell what's actually helping.
Does "naturally derived" mean skin-friendly? Not automatically. Naturally derived ingredients can still irritate. Patch-test first and go by how your own skin feels.
