If your skin tends towards dryness, tightness or sensitivity, BE GENTLE™ is usually the calmer choice. If your skin feels more normal, or shines towards the T-zone while the cheeks stay even, BE BALANCED™ often suits better. Both are simple care systems of cleansing and hydration — not a medical treatment. What decides it isn't a label, but what you observe on your own skin.

The quick decision

Rather than a diagnosis, an honest bit of self-observation over a few days will help you. Wash your face with water only in the morning and look in the mirror an hour later: is it tight and flaky, does it look matte and thin? Then you lean towards dry/sensitive — BE GENTLE™. Does the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) shine while the cheeks look normal, or does everything feel evenly unremarkable? Then more likely normal/combination — BE BALANCED™. Both systems are straightforward to use morning and evening. You'll find a fuller placing in MONAT skincare: the overview.

BE GENTLE™ and BE BALANCED™ side by side

Both systems follow the same simple structure: a cleanser, a moisturiser and, optionally, a serum. The difference lies in the direction, not the complexity.

  • BE GENTLE™ is built for calm and hydration. The cleanser is mild and meant not to dry the skin out; the care aims at comfort and a soft feel. Sensible when skin gets tight quickly or reacts to a lot with irritation.
  • BE BALANCED™ is aimed at skin that's neither especially dry nor permanently oily. Cleansing and care are meant to keep a balance without weighing down or drying out — pleasant with a light shine in the T-zone.

Which individual products are actually available can differ by market. So take your bearings from the function (cleanse + hydrate + optional serum), not from a fixed product list. The simplest comparison in one sentence: BE GENTLE™ leans on soothing and replenishing, BE BALANCED™ on balancing without weighing down. Both share the same simple framework — so you don't have to learn more steps, just pick the direction that matches your skin type.

Choose BE GENTLE™ if …

  • your skin regularly feels tight or flaky after washing
  • you experience yourself as sensitive and many products quickly lead to redness or stinging
  • your skin turns rough quickly in winter or in dry, heated air
  • you prefer a soothing, hydration-led feel
  • you've tended to use too little care rather than too much, and you're after comfort

BE GENTLE™ is the restrained option — good if, in doubt, you'd rather start gentler.

Choose BE BALANCED™ if …

  • your skin feels mostly normal, without strong tightness
  • you have combination skin: a shiny T-zone but even cheeks
  • creams sometimes feel too rich to you, or heavy
  • you're after a light, everyday-friendly care that neither dries out nor weighs down
  • your skin takes hydration well but doesn't need an extra comfort programme

BE BALANCED™ is the balancing option for skin that above all likes consistency.

Who neither is right for

Both systems are cosmetic care — they do not treat any skin condition. They are not the right choice if:

  • you suspect or have an acute or persistent skin condition, such as acne, eczema or rosacea. That belongs with a dermatological assessment, not "cared away" with cosmetics.
  • you notice strong irritation, swelling, pain, weeping or signs of infection — then please get it medically assessed before using any care system.
  • you're pursuing a very specific active-ingredient goal (for instance, targeting a particular concern), for which a single, purpose-formulated product or professional advice fits better than a general routine system.
  • your skin has reacted to several new products and you first want to work out what it tolerates.

When in doubt: first calm and stabilise the skin, then choose a system. How to support your protective layer is covered in Strengthening the skin barrier.

A simple routine — the same for both

Whichever system you choose, the sequence stays almost identical and deliberately simple:

  • Morning: cleanse mildly, then apply the moisturiser. During the day, add sun protection to suit your needs.
  • Evening: cleanse to wash off the day, then the moisturiser. Optionally a serum before the cream, if you use one.

Apply products to slightly damp skin, work from light to rich, and give each new product a few days before adding the next. Less, but regularly, beats a lot all at once. If your skin feels comfortable in the morning and neither tight nor weighed down in the evening, you've found the right direction. If it responds over several days with redness, stinging or flaking, pause and cut back to the plain basics before building up further. The groundwork is in Skincare routine: the basics.

Can you combine the two?

In principle you don't have to commit dogmatically to one system — skin doesn't know brand names. In practice, though, it makes sense to stay within one system, because the products are coordinated with one another and you'll more easily spot what works if your skin reacts.

A pragmatic mix can make sense if your skin behaves inconsistently: say a milder cleanser but a balancing moisturiser. Introduce such combinations one at a time and slowly, and watch how your skin responds. If your skin changes with the season — drier in winter, more balanced in summer — it's perfectly normal to switch seasonally between gentler and balancing care rather than rigidly sticking to one system.

Quick questions

How can I tell whether my skin is dry or normal? Observe it for a few days: if it's tight and flaky after washing, it's more on the dry side (BE GENTLE™). If it feels unremarkable or only the T-zone shines, you lean towards normal/combination (BE BALANCED™). That's self-observation, not a diagnosis.

Does either system help against acne or rosacea? No. Both are cosmetic care and do not treat any skin condition. For acne, eczema, rosacea or persistent complaints, please get a dermatological assessment.

What if I choose wrong? You'll usually notice within a few days — too dry or too rich. Then you can switch. The only important thing is not to carry on through strong irritation, but to pause.

Do I definitely need a serum? No. Cleansing and hydration are the basis. A serum is optional and can be added later, once your skin tolerates the basic care well.
