Your Hair Routine Plan: 7 Days and 3 Weeks
Seven simple steps for the first week, then three weeks with one step each. No day takes more than a few minutes, and none of it needs expensive mistakes. Take what fits your everyday life.
Day 1: Wash, and rinse the lengths deliberately
Wash with lukewarm water instead of hot, and massage the shampoo into the scalp only, not the lengths. Then rinse the lengths deliberately, until nothing feels slippery any more. That cleans without drying out. Guide: How to Wash Your Hair Properly: How Often Is Necessary?
Day 2: Conditioner only, no shampoo
Conditioner only today, no shampoo. Work it into lengths and ends, leave it for two to three minutes and rinse cool. For most hair types a day without shampoo is perfectly enough.
Day 3: Style once without heat
Leave the dryer, the straightener and the curling iron off today. Do not rub your hair dry, press it in a soft towel or a T-shirt and let it air-dry. If you cannot manage without the dryer: keep your distance, medium heat, and always heat protection. Guide: Air-Dry vs. Blow-Dry: Which Is Better for Your Hair?
Day 4: Massage the scalp gently while washing
Healthy hair starts at the scalp. Massage it for two minutes while washing, with your fingertips and not your nails. If it itches or flakes, switching to mild, low-irritation products is worth it. Guide: Sensitive Scalp: Understanding Itching, Flakes & Tightness
Day 5: Take a look at your ends
Look at your ends in daylight today: split, brittle, or actually fine? Then comb only when the hair is damp or conditioned, and from the ends upward. At night a satin or silk pillowcase helps against breakage and frizz. Guide: Avoiding mechanical hair damage: brush, ties, sleep
Day 6: Let a mask sit
Take the time for a mask today. Work it into lengths and ends, leave the scalp out, let it sit for five to ten minutes and rinse cool. Longer than the pack says achieves nothing. Guide: Do Hair Masks Really Work? What They Can and Cannot Do
Day 7: Take a photo and compare fairly
Take a photo in daylight, in the same corner and the same light as usual. If you took one at the start of the week, compare the two fairly: a week is short, and hair grows slowly. Keep whatever felt good.
Week 2: Stick to your order of steps for a week
The first week was for trying things out, this one is for keeping them. Settle on an order of steps that fits your everyday life and stay with it for a week. Fewer steps you actually do are worth more than a long list. Guide: Building a Hair-Care Routine: The 3 Steps That Matter
Week 3: Skip the heat once, where it is easy
Find one occasion this week where the heat is dispensable anyway, and skip it. A weekend at home or a day with your hair tied back is enough. This is not about never blow-drying again, it is about one occasion fewer. Guide: Heat Protectant for Hair: When and How to Use It
Week 4: Take a new photo and compare it with the first
Four weeks are up. Take a new photo, again in daylight and in the same spot, and put it next to the first one. What has changed shows up here rather than in the mirror, and what stayed the same is an answer too.
